Welcome back to the Cavern for more One Piece Content. Although this is a older topic, I still see certain comments in regards to what went down in The Mirror World & it prompted me to officially speak on it for future readers/fans.
This wont be too extensive/detailed of a post honestly so I’ll get straight to the points early on.
Luffy after taking down a Powerful man like Doflamingo, alongside Trafalgar Law, he had entered into the Whole Cake Territories with Confidence in his ability to bring back Black–Leg Sanji. But Luffy quickly realized after encountering Pirates such as General Cracker, that an Emperors Crew isn’t to be underestimated.
Katakuri outclassed Strawhat Luffy in nearly every category! they had a test of Physical Power, Speed, even devil fruit superiority & Charlotte Katakuri won each time! his physical superiority over Gear 2nd & 3rd is only boosted with his greater Haki capabilities.
Luffy’s Boundman transformation was the only way he could contend with Katakuri on a somewhat equal level & even then it was only temporary due to the General losing his cool/concentration.
with us witnessing Luffy’s beat–down on a weekly basis, this is why many fans were outraged & jumping to the claim of plot armor being for the reason why Luffy was able to survive & “defeat” Katukuri. But Oda is a master author & he gave us the answer in the midst of the battle but many overlooked this.
Katakuri is an honorable man despite being a Pirate, he acknowledged Strawhats determination & resolve to keep standing despite his initial opinion on what’s shameful due to his “I must be perfect” upbringing. As Luffy told Rayleigh, the Personality of his enemy is an important factor in his inevitable Confrontations.

Katakuri was in a position of complete dominance & everything that transpired, happened because he allowed it!
- Refused outside support/assistance
- self inflicted injury
- put away his Famed Trident, “Mole“
- allowed Luffy to activate Gear 4 Snakeman
Individuals Like his Older brother Perospero, or better yet Doflamingo would not do things like this & it’s not because of “Plot armor” Katakuri & Doflamingo are both different men with a completely opposite mindset
The Sweet General, did not necessarily let Luffy win in the sense as many figure, But he instead chose to give Luffy a fair chance to survive their encounter! He set the terms of of the battle of his own volition but in doing so Luffy was able to Win & survive.
